You may, before venturing into this post, want to read the first part written about Tessa. ‘OCD In My Cat’.

After procrastinating for some time and mulling over the idea put forth in one of  the  comments, I decided that I couldn’t spend the money on a drinking fountain for my cat afterall. The outlay, if  it didn’t work would have been too much even if I could resell on Ebay.

Tessa's 'new' drinking fountain

Crude, but effective

Putting A ‘Useless’ Christmas Present To Good Use

The idea, however got my partner to thinking that he could devise a fountain from a little decorative fountain I received as a Christmas present one year. A supposed useless present at the time, because it was too noisy and I never could comprehend how someone can enjoy the trickling of water through the noise of an electric/battery operated pump.

Still, I didn’t throw it away, ‘Just in case…’ and here we are a few Christmases later, putting it to good use. I’m so glad I offered the fountain to Peter before we gave it away. I thought he might be able to put the electric cord and motor to use one day. Little did I know!  Actually, we don’t use the electricity opting for the rechargeable batteries for safety purposes around water.

I’ve had to be pretty strict with Tessa because even now, after a couple or more months, She still sits next to the tap in the laundry. On super hot days and we’ve had a few of those lately, I will turn the tap on just to know She’s getting a good drink, but for the most part, when I turn our own little fountain on Tessa will jump across to it and once She gets her whiskers around things, She’ll have a good guzzle.

Success At Last

I would class this as a success. We still have our moments for sure, but if that’s the only running water, there’s not much Tessa cat can do. I always keep a bowl of water handy, too.

Because there isn’t a filter to keep the recycling of water fresh as there is with the proper water fountain, I just change the water regularly, but it still doesn’t waste as much as a running tap. Nowhere near as much. So, my conscience can rest easy knowing I am saving a precious commodity whilst nurturing my lovely, little feline friend.

Thankyou to those who made suggestions, but especially to Cindy Bidar for sparking an idea in my partner’s mind. Thanks also to Peter for being so creative and mechanically capable.
