I had two teenagers doing trick or treat at the door on Oct 31st. It was 9.30pm. Must admit, I’d forgotton about Halloween 2009Halloween temporarily despite all the Twittering leading up to it from everyone. I was involved in settling Charlotte when they arrived and we don’t do a whole lot of celebrating for it in this area. I was a wee bit nervous when the door knock came. Peter was away for the weekend and noone had ever knocked on our door at that time of night.

Trick  Or  Treat

I called out ‘Who is it?’ and they called back  ‘Trick or Treat’.  My next comment before opening the door was ‘I hope you’re not too scary for my 4 year old’.  For me really, but hey! I could see through the door that they were brightly lit up, no clue what their faces looked like and still no idea. They looked fabulous dressed up in brightly lit bracelets. You know the ones where you crack them to get the light going and then after 24 hrs they fade out? (Little secret I learned recently. Pop them in the freezer to prolong life. It worked for me).

I didn’t switch the porch light on ’cause I didn’t want to take away from the effect, hence my not knowing what they looked like. Yes, I did look at these fella’s, but it was dark and they had lights hanging off them all over the place. Okay, not all over the place if the visuals are a bit much for you on that one.

A  Home Without Treats

When it came to giving treats, I realised I had none in. What? A Mum with no treats AND on Halloween. Shame on me!  The guys gave Charlotte one of the bracelets, so they asked for it back, but only jokingly. I, also jokingly, said “You can have it if you can get it off Charlotte”. We had some fun banter going on. Once they left empty handed :-(   I also realised, I probably could have given them a couple of bucks each.

Oh well, maybe next year. You know afterwards, I felt quite proud of myself  for not  having any junk food to give away. Not to say our house is always junk free. One of the things we do nowadays, is buy some plain biscuits, then decorate them with icing sugar and sprinkles. How junky is that! I wasn’t about to invite a couple of strangers into the house on Halloween, then teach them how to do this, though.  lol.  And, Peter has taken to buying me Chocolate Eclairs from time to time despite my asking him not to. Secretly I want him to continue and as if  I’d share them!

So, that was the extent of my Halloween celebrations. What about yours? I hope you had a great time with a few fun kinda frights thrown in. And some treats ( junk ), too.
