I’ve just had the best day with Peter & Charlotte. I’m so glad Charlotte loves the snow as much as I do. We decided to catch the final remnants of it up at Mt. Baw Baw in Victoria. There was a bit of a dump last week and earlier this week. A little unseasonal, but it does happen from time to time. My Father experienced a blizzard on Boxing Day which is the 26th Dec and Summer for those who don’t know about Boxing Day. Extremely unseasonal!
Peter and I like to ski, mostly cross country, more for financial reasons from my perspective and Peter has been fortunate enough to get some skiing in for the past few years with his other children whilst I have cared for Charlotte.
Yes, a bit of dissent taking place on that one. This year, Charlotte and I almost missed out on a visit to the snow altogether, but thanks to the heavens, we headed up there today. It was a gorgeous day and a surprising amount of snow on the top. I expected a blast of cold air upon exiting the car, but not so.
It’s many years since I spent any time at Mt. B B. I actually worked in the Ski Hire shop for a short while and stayed on the mountain many moons ago. It is also a childhood haunt. A few years absence have brought some pleasant changes. There is a great ‘new’ restaurant and it was, to my delight, open. Years ago, once snow season was declared over, everywhere closed up until the following Winter.
It’s always nice to be able to grab a cuppa and walk into a warm atmosphere for a bight to eat when visiting the snow. Having said that, I just wanted to sit outside initially, gazing at a view to die for in the fresh air and watching the birds. Clear skies afforded views right into the valley and beyond. It did get pretty chilly after awhile, so we wandered in and warmed ourselves by a lovely log fire, lounging about on the comfy couches. Charlotte and I had an icecream, though. lol.
Back out after lunch to tramp in the snow, have a snowball fight or two or three and toboggan on some small slopes. Some of the short pinches gave us a surprisingly, exhilarating ride! Heap big fun. All up we had about 4 hours on the mountain, mostly playing. I love the snow for many reasons, but particularly for the good workout you get tramping up and down the slopes without having to think about it. If I could do that everyday, I’d soon be toning up those neglected muscles. I am one of those fortunate people, though that can go a long time without any aerobic type exercise, suddenly have a burst of it and not feel the aches and pains afterwards as some folks do.
We’ve got another outdoor day weatherwise coming up tomorrow. Hmmm, maybe we should go to a different mountain for the truly last remnants of snow. It only takes 1 1/2 hrs to drive to both the cross country mountain with no facilities other than a warm room & Mt. Baw Baw. Likewise, in the other direction it takes the same time to get to the beach. Not a bad place to live here in West Gippsland. We’re surrounded by lush green (at this time of year), undulating hills. I’m drawn to it because it reminds me of the area of Wales that I came from. Just lovely!
