Do you use the old ‘Santa knows if you’ve been good or bad, so be good for goodness sake’ thing with your kids at this
time of year? Would Santa REALLY not stop by your home if your child was misbehavin?’
I don’t like feeding that line to my 4 year old daughter because, let’s face it kids have their moments, but is it being
naughty? I even try to avoid that word. Whatever the behaviour, it is a child expressing something that they can’t verbalise yet and does feeding them the ‘be good or else’ line really change their behaviour? Me thinks not.
I’m Speaking From Experience
Now I have to say that Charlotte, although being a very assertive girl (thank God) and full on with wanting us to play, is behaviourally easy in other ways. Her meltdowns are rare and shortlived and usually rather heartbreaking. And She really grasps things that we ask of her quickly. BUT, I’m not coming from a place of little experience either. For many years I have cared for children as a Nanny, Palliative care volunteer and as a Foster Carer, so I’ve observed some interesting behaviour in children. The one thing I couldn’t do is say ‘Santa won’t come if you’re naughty’, because there’s NO WAY I would follow through. Santa will be coming to this household no matter what issues take place prior to Christmas Day. I hope it is the same for you if indeed, you celebrate Christmas.
Stop The Ultimatums
For 2010 and onwards let’s stop feeding our children ultimatums that we are just not going to follow through with. Let’s get real with ourselves and our children. I know it’s hard when things are tough, but we have to give it our best. It’s something I have to work on within myself constantly. I’m not perfect as a Mother (YET! LOL)
I wish you all a safe and happy time over the holidays and go easy on yourself AND your precious children.
Merry Christmas 🙂
As I was taking a drive this afternoon, reflecting upon this post and thankfully having saved it in my drafts, I was having a wee chuckle to myself. Here am I, speaking of getting real AND Santa in the same breath. Hmmm. More reflective time required, I think 🙂Watch movie online The Transporter Refueled (2015)Leave a Comment »
